SCOTLAND  2 v 1  ENGLAND
Eat End Park, Dunfermline

Scotland scored after 10 mins from a corner by Pat Nevin, headed in by Dave McPherson. The Scotland team were more mobile than their English counterparts and went further ahead from another header, this time by Tosh McKinley from a cross by Dave Bowman. Just before half time, Paul Gascoigne (looking far leaner than he ever was playing for Rangers) shot past his former team-mate Andy Goram.
A good crowd of around 6500 saw an entertaining first half, with Scotland full of running, and Gary McAllister spraying the ball around in the middle of the park. The second half did not quite live up to the first half, but Darren Jackson and Ally McCoist (who had come on as a second half substitute for Pat Nevin) gave the crowd something to cheer with a couple of good runs.
Andy Goram had a few good saves, whilst Gary McAllister was unlucky not to score in the first half. Dave Watson for the visitors showed why he was an outstanding defender for Everton.
All in all it was good entertainment, and whilst the pace may have gone for some of these players, their skill still shone through.

----Feb 2004----

For some incredibly cunning reason, only known to the SFA's pioneering Commercial Dept, the Scotland's U21's game against Hungary has been moved from Tuesday 17th February to Wednesday 18th February.
It's another Master-Plan pulled out of the never empty "hat of stupid ideas" that our Commercial Dept own.
Now our young troops will play in front of a crowd of 10 and go head to head with the Full team who will be playing in Wales that same evening.
The Commercial Dept will have to try hard to beat that one in the future.

----Jan 2004----

Scotland's U21's will take on Hungary on the night we leave for Cardiff. Rather than staying in the pub getting mong'd, we could spend some quality time supporting the young ones in their first game in West Lothian. This from the BBC:-

Scotland U21 v Hungary U21-
The match will take place at the City Stadium, Livingston, the day before the senior side play against Wales, who do not field under-21 team, in Cardiff.
Bonhof will gather around 30 young players at Hampden Park on Tuesday for a two-day training session.
Bonhof said: "I will explain to the players this week what is going on and what I expect from them."
The under-21s also play host to Romania on 30 March before travelling to Denmark for another friendly game on 27 April. "Over the next few months, I will try to see all of the players in their positions, which is a major step forward compared to the preparation for the last campaign, which had to be done in six weeks," Bonhoff added.
Bonhof guided Scotland's U-21's to the top of their European Championship group, which included Germany, but the youngsters lost out in a play-off with Croatia.

Expected training squad:
Goalkeepers: David Marshall (Celtic), Craig Samson (Kilmarnock), Graeme Smith (Rangers), Iain Turner (Everton) Defenders: John Dempster (Rushden & Diamonds), Alexander Diamond (Aberdeen), Shaun Dillon (Kilmarnock), Andrew Dowie (Rangers), John Kennedy (Celtic), William Kinniburgh (Motherwell), Paul McMullan (Heart of Midlothian), Scott Morrison (Aberdeen), Mark Wilson (Dundee United) Midfield: Shaun Fagan (Motherwell), Mark Fotheringham (Dundee), Simon Lappin (St Mirren), Paul Lawson (Celtic), Jamie McCunnie (Ross County), Stephen O'Donnell (Dundee United), John Rankin (Ross County), Peter Sweeney (Millwall), Kevin Thomson (Hibernian), Ross Wallace (Celtic) Forwards: Craig Beattie (Celtic), Kris Boyd (Kilmarnock), Scott Brown (Hibernian), David Clarkson (Motherwell), Robbie Foy (Liverpool), Paul Gallagher (Blackburn Rovers), Shaun Maloney (Celtic), Stephen Murray (Kilmarnock), Garry O'Connor (Hibernian), Bryan Prunty (Aberdeen), Derek Riordan (Hibernian), Graham Weir (Heart of Midlothian).

SCOTLAND SQUAD FOR NETHERLANDS TIE
There are two surprise inclusions in the Scotland squad for the Euro 2004 play-offs against the Netherlands. Goalkeeper Jonathan Gould earns a recall to the squad, three years after the last of his two caps. And midfielder Stephen Pearson is promoted from the Under 21 squad.
With team captain Paul Lambert still injured, and several players on yellow cards which could force them to miss the return if they are booked again, Berti Vogts has named a 25 man squad to ensure there is cover for all eventualities.
Scotland face the Netherlands at Hampden Park on Saturday, 15 November, kick-off 3 pm in front of a sell-out crowd. And there will also be a capacity audience for the return in Amsterdam on 19 November.

Kenny Miller returned to action with Wolves last week after a lengthy lay-off and will give added punch to the Scotland attack, while Manchester United youngster Darren Fletcher could be in line for his second cap after making his debut in Norway.

MUSIC, FOOTBALL AND FANS

The Scottish FA and Safeway will be staging a great new pre-match event called Fanfair for football fans heading to Scotland’s vital Euro 2004 qualifier with the Faroe Islands at Hampden this Saturday.
Fanfair will be fun and free. It takes place at Queen's Park Recreation Ground (ten minutes walk from the stadium) from 12.45 to 2.15 pm and will feature some hot new music talent in the shape of Scots rockers Speedway and rising R'n'B star, Wayne Williams. This great new event will be hosted by Gina McKie from Radio Clyde who will be warming up the fans in her own inimitable style prior to the big kick off.
Fans can also try out their own football skills at the Fun area with Human Table Football and Beat The Goalie games.
Scottish Radio Holdings stations across the country, including Clyde 1, Forth One, Tay FM, MFR, Northsound 1 and West FM, have been promoting this event over the past week and are running on-air competitions all this week to give some lucky fans the chance to attend the Fanfair and the match in style, so tune into your favourite local station this week for your chance to win.
Colin Banks, Brand Manager at the Scottish FA says: "The game is a vital one for us to win and we want to attract as many fans as possible to come along and get right behind the team. The Scotland Fanfair has been created for just this reason, so it is wonderful that Safeway, the national team sponsors, are backing us to entertain the fans prior to the game, reward them for their support by making the event free, and hopefully start the celebrations early!"
Julia Barnes, Safeway's Marketing Controller (Scotland), added: "We invite Scotland fans to join the fun at Fanfair and practise their singing before encouraging Scotland to victory against the Faroe Islands."
Over and above the stage and Fun area there will be a ticket office at the Fanfair selling match tickets for the game plus an official merchandise unit and food stalls.
Tickets for Scotland v the Faroe Islands cost from £10 for adults and £7/£3 for families and are available now in selected Safeway stores, TicketScotland outlets and at Hampden Park.

NEW KIT DEAL FOR SCOTLAND

Diadora, the famous Italian sportswear manufacturer, has announced a new three year kit deal, worth around £3 million, with the Scottish Football Association. The deal will see Diadora supply the Scotland Football teams with new high quality home and away kits and training wear from next season.

The new home kit will first be worn by the Scotland team in the game against the Faroe Islands on Saturday 6 September and will be on sale from Thursday 4 September. Andrew Ronnie, Managing Director of Diadora UK, commented, "We are delighted with the new deal and look forward to building a long and prosperous partnership with the Scottish FA. The Scotland teams and their fans are known and respected worldwide, they epitomise everything we believe in at Diadora, with their passion for their team and country and a ceaseless desire for success."

Bill Wilson, Commercial Director of the Scottish FA, commented "There has been quite a bit of speculation recently surrounding our position with our current kit supplier FILA and I can confirm that we have agreed to them resigning their current contract at the end of this season. As a result of this we take great pleasure in welcoming Diadora as our new kit supplier from next season. Diadora is a recognised and successful sports brand, especially within football, and we look forward to developing kit with them that both the players and supporters alike will be proud of."

CRAIG BURLEY STEPS DOWN

The Scottish FA was today informed by Craig Burley that he has withdrawn from the Scotland Future Squad to face Northern Ireland next week, and also that he wishes to retire from international football.
The Derby County midfielder returned to the Scotland team against Austria last month to win his 46th cap after a lengthy absence through injury.
In his letter to the Scottish FA, he thanked Berti Vogts for considering him for selection and explained: "This is a very difficult decision for me and it is one that I have not taken lightly. I sincerely hope that you enjoy a successful time as Scotland manager.”
Berti Vogts said:“I accept and understand Craig’s situation at this stage of his career, as I realise he is recovering from long term injury problems which kept him out of the game. I would like to wish Craig the best of luck for his future career.”

Good? Bad? Tell us what you think of the SFA's decision to go with Diadora....

DIADORA TO MAKE THE NEW KIT

SCOTLAND are set to announce a new multi-million pound strip deal with Diadora.
The SFA will sign a £1million-a-year contract with Diadora this summer after ending their current agreement with Italian firm Fila 12 months early.
Puma, TFG and Xara were also in the running to land the Scotland contract. But the bid from Diadora, who have an association with Rangers, had the greatest financial appeal.
SFA commercial director Bill Wilson would only say: "A number of companies have made bids. We expect to come to a decision before September."
However, Diadora are now in the process of making samples of the new strip, which will be worn for the first time against Germany in Dortmund on September 10.

Let's hope that the SFA let the fans decide the top and they do not make another mistake. Surely they have learned their lesson from their previous decision of the ill fated Pin-Stripe fiasco. Scotland's worst selling top ever!

Good? Bad? Tell us what you think of the SFA's decision to go with Diadora....

SCOTLAND LOOK FOR NEW KIT SUPPLIER

SCOTLAND are set to end their £7million shirt sponsorship deal with cash-strapped sportswear giant Fila this summer.
The deal has another 12 months to run, but the SFA are concerned about the financial uncertainty surrounding the company.
They are actively looking for a new backer for the national strip and could unveil a replacement sponsor before their Euro 2004 showdown with Germany in the autumn.
SFA commercial director Bill Wilson said: "We won't be continuing with Fila beyond this summer. We needed a daily liaison with their people and could not have that.
"Fortunately, we have stockpiled kit and we have all the supplies we need for the remainder of this season. This has not come as a surprise."
Fila signed a four- year kit deal with Scotland in 2000, but have announced job losses and closure of their main production plant in Gateshead.
The Tartan Army had also found it difficult to purchase Fila merchandise - including the blue and white pin-striped home shirt.
The final straw for the deal came when it emerged Scotland had only enough kit to fulfil their fixtures this season.

SCOTLAND SQUADS CHOSEN

Berti Vogts has named an 18 man squad for Scotland’s Euro 2004 qualifiers against Iceland and Lithuania, with the prospect of more players being called in after the weekend’s club fixtures. A newcomer to the squad is Andy Webster of Hearts, who performed so well in last month’s Future Team international in Turkey.

The manager explained that he would be watching this weekend’s fixtures closely before deciding which players would be asked to join the squad, but expected that five or six names will be added before the squad gathering on Monday evening.

The calendar is not yet complete, as there may be further matches arranged in May, during the build-up to Scotland's match against Germany; with England's domestic calendar finishing four weeks before the Germany match, there will be a need to keep the players match fit.

SFA SAYS THANKS TO THE FANS

Berti Vogts and the SFA have said a big 'thankyou' to the fans who helped to create such a wonderful atmosphere at Easter Road on Tuesday evening, helping the team to victory over Canada.

After the match, in which he earned one of the biggest cheers of the night by responding to the fans’ chant of ‘Berti, Berti, give us a wave’, the manager acknowledged their support both in Edinburgh and at the weekend in Iceland. He said: "The Scottish fans have always been very good to me and they know how difficult the job is to build a new team. It has been a great week and I am enjoying this job."

An SFA spokesman said: "There was an electric atmosphere and we would like to thank the supporters for turning up in such huge numbers to create a really memorable occasion. Events like this can only help our bid to stage Euro 2008, by showing once again how much the Scots love their football.

"Our only regret is that some fans who turned up late were unable to get in as the last available tickets were sold about half an hour before kick-off." The match attracted a crowd of over 16,000 to Easter Road, and he added: "The victory on Saturday really captured the imagination of our support, and we were run off our feet by the late interest caused by fans wanting to see the match. Although tickets had been on sale for almost a month, and we did advise fans to come early, we sold about 6,000 tickets on the day of the match at Easter Road and at Safeway stores. All we can do is ask people to make sure they buy their tickets early next time we have a Scotland international."

SFA give Berti the kiss of death....eh.....I mean their full support.

The SFA will give Berti Vogts every support in his work to restore success to the Scotland international set-up, after the team struggled to a 2-2 draw against the Faroe Islands yesterday.
Scotland's first competitive match under the German manager nearly ended in disaster after the Faroes took an early two goal lead, but a fighting display in the second half earned the Scots a draw with goals from Paul Lambert and Barry Ferguson. However, the overall performance highlighted the general malaise affecting Scottish football, with clubs and country struggling in international competition.
Berti Vogts made it clear after the match that he needs time to turn the team's fortunes around, and that view was backed up by SFA Chief Executive David Taylor. The next qualifier, in five weeks time against Iceland, could prove decisive in deciding who finished second in Group 5, but at least there is then a six month break before the spring qualifiers.
In the long term, there are definite signs of progress in the Under 21 team, who are now undefeated in three matches under Rainer Bonhof following Friday's 1-1 draw with Northern Ireland. Berti Vogts already has five players young enough to play in the Under 21 team, and more could make the step up if they can establish themselves in their clubs teams.

POSITIVE END TO UEFA INSPECTION

The UEFA inspection of Scotland and Ireland's bid to stage Euro 2008 finished on a high note today, with confirmation from both governments that they are committed to providing all the stadiums necessary.
As the five day visit concluded with an inspection of Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland's First Minister Jack McConnell and the Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern signed a joint letter to UEFA. They said: "We would like to take this opportunity to reassure you about the four additional stadiums required for 2008. Both the Irish and Scottish Governments are fully committed to providing all the stadiums necessary for this world class tournament. During your visit you have heard our plans in detail and you can be assured that these new stadiums will be modern with all the facilities you have specified and that they will match or exceed your required capacities.
"We are determined to do all that we can to support the bid by the SFA and FAI for Euro 2008. This is an unrivalled opportunity for our two countries to host the world's third largest sports event."
Lars-Christer Olsson, UEFA's Director of Professional Football and Marketing, said: "We are very happy with what we have seen in Ireland and Scotland. It has met all our requirements; we had high expectations and they have been absolutely met." On the letter, he commented: "It is good to have reassurances from the highest level, and we don't doubt them."
