Chicago (Widescreen Edition) $4.54 Bob Fosse’s sexy cynicism still shines in Chicago, a faithful movie adaptation of the choreographer-director’s 1975 Broadway musical. Of course the story, all about merry murderesses and tabloid fame, is set in the Roaring ’20s, but Chicago reeks of ’70s disenchantment–this isn’t just Fosse’s material, it’s his attitude, too. That’s probably why the movie’s breathless observations on fleeting fam… |

Tap Dancing America : A Cultural History $17.89 Here is the vibrant, colorful, high-stepping story of tap–the first comprehensive, fully documented history of a uniquely American art form, exploring all aspects of the intricate musical and social exchange that evolved from Afro-Irish percussive step dances like the jig, gioube, buck-and-wing, and juba to the work of such contemporary tap luminaries as Gregory Hines, Brenda Bufalino, Dianne Walker, and Savion Glover. In Tap Dancing America, Constance Valis Hill, herself an accomplished jazz tap dancer, choreographer, and performance scholar, begins with a dramatic account of a buck dance challenge between Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and Harry Swinton at Brooklyn's Bijou Theatre, on March 30, 1900, and proceeds decade by decade through the 20th century to the present day. She vividly describes tap's musical styles and steps–from buck-and-wing and ragtime stepping at the turn of the century; jazz tapping to the rhythms of hot jazz, swing, and bebop in the '20s, '30s and '40s; to hip-hop-inflected hitting and hoofing in heels (high and low) from the 1990s right up to today. Tap was long considered "a man's game," and Hill's is the first history to highlight such outstanding female dancers as Ada Overton Walker, Kitty O'Neill, and Alice Whitman, at the turn of the 20th century, as well as the pioneering women composers of the tap renaissance, in the 70s and 80s, and the hard-hitting rhythm-tapping women of the millennium such as Chloe Arnold, Ayodele Casel, Michelle Dorrance, and Dormeshia Sumbry Edwards. Written with all the verve and grace of tap itself, drawing on eye-witness accounts of early performances as well as interviews with today's greatest tappers, and richly illustrated with over ninety images, Tap Dancing America fills a major gap in American dance history and places tap firmly center stage. |

A Life in Ragtime: A Biography of James Reese Europe $38 In 1919, the world stood at the threshold of the Jazz Age. The man who had ushered it there, however, lay murdered—and would soon plunge from international fame to historical obscurity. It was a fate few would have predicted for James Reese Europe; he was then at the pinnacle of his career as a composer, conductor, and organizer in the black community, with the promise of even greater heights to come. "People don’t realize yet today what we lost when we lost Jim Europe," said pianist Eubie Blake. "He was the savior of Negro musiciansin a class with Booker T. Washington and Martin Luther King." In A Life in Ragtime , Reid Badger brilliantly captures this fascinating life, tracing a critical chapter in the emergence of jazz through one man’s remarkable odyssey. After an early start in Washington, Europe found his fame in New York, the entertainment capital of turn-of-the-century America. In the decade before the First World War, he emerged as an acknowledged leader in African-American musical theater, both as a conductor and an astonishingly prolific composer. Badger reveals a man of tremendous depths and ambitions, constantly aspiring to win recognition for black musicians and wider acceptance for their music. He toiled constantly, working on benefit concerts, joining hands with W.E.B. Du Bois, and helping to found a black music school—all the while winning commercial and critical success with his chosen art. In 1910, he helped create the Clef Club, making it the premiere African-American musical organization in the country during his presidency. Every year from 1912 to 1914, Europe led the Clef Club orchestra in triumphant concerts at Carnegie Hall, winning new respectability and popularity for ragtime. He went on to a tremendously successful collaboration with Vernon and Irene Castle, the international stars who made social dancing a world-wide rage. Along the way, Europe helped to revolutionize American music—and |

A Life in Ragtime: A Biography of James Reese Europe $63.32 In A Life in Ragtime, Reid Badger brilliantly captures the fascinating life of James Reese Europe, tracing a critical chapter in the emergence of jazz through one man’s remarkable odyssey. He went on to an extraordinarily successful collaboration with Vernon and Irene Castle, the international stars who made social dancing a world-wide rage. In World War I, the musical pioneer won new fame as the first African-American officer to lead men into combat in that conflict – but he was best known as band leader for the all-black 15th Infantry Regiment. As the Hellfighters of the 15th racked up successes on the battlefield, Europe’s band took France by storm with the new sounds of jazz. In 1919, the soldiers returned to New York in triumph, and Europe was the toast of the city. Then, just a few months later, he was dead – stabbed to death by a drummer in his own orchestra. From humble beginnings to tragicend, the story of Jim Europe comes alive in Reid Badger’s account. |

Being Prez: The Life and Music of Lester Young $27.95 Lester Young was one of the great jazz masters, and his impact on the course of the art form was profound. He fundamentally changed the way the saxophone was played—his long, flowing lines brought new levels of expressiveness and subtlety to the jazz language, setting the standard for all modern players. In Being Prez, renowned British critic Dave Gelly follows Lester Young through his life in a rapidly changing world, showing how the music of this exceptionally sensitive man was shaped by his experiences. The reader meets a complicated, vulnerable, gentle individual who was brought up in his father’s traveling carnival band. His early career was spent in the nightclubs and dancehalls of Kansas City and the Southwest, and he made his landmark recording debut at the peak of the Swing Era. But at the height of his powers, he was drafted into the US Army, where racism and his own unworldliness landed him in military prison. Following these events, Young grew increasingly withdrawn and suspicious, changes in his character reflected in the darkening mood of his music. Gelly, himself a jazz saxophonist, examines many of Young’s classic recordings in illuminating detail. He reveals how as a saxophonist—and as major contributor to the Count Basie band—Young created a strong personal voice, a cool modernism, and a new rhythmic flexibility in the freely dancing rhythms of 4-beat swing. With his sax jutting oddly to one side, his bizarre oblique use of language, and his unique musical rapport with Billie Holiday (who famously nicknamed him "Prez"), Lester Young has become an icon and a cult figure. This marvelous biography illuminates the life and work of this giant of jazz. |

From jump and jive to sweet romanticism, half a century of popular hits is given spectacular treatment. By the Light of the Silvery Moon is sung in a theatre with lantern slides on the screen. Singer Ruby Elzy’s St. Louis Blues is backed by a chorus of eighty. And Wait Till the Sun Shines, Nellie brings Crosby and Martin together in a knockout duet. This bright, bouncy musical is as spirited as they come, and it features Bing and Mary at their best. (Louella O. Parsons, Los Angeles Examiner)BLUE SKIES: For what Fred Astaire had announced would be his last film, no expense was spared. This musical extravaganza boasts 30 Irving Berlin songs, 47 sets, sumptuous costumes, and a budget of $3,000,000. The result is sensational. (And fortunately, Astaire did not retire from films!)Dancing star Jed Potter (Astaire) and singer/nightclub owner Johnny Adams (Bing Crosby) are both in love with songstress Mary O’Hara (Joan Caulfield). She marries Johnny, but his passion for buying and selling nightclubs drives them apart. So Jed steps in, hoping to win Mary’s heart – until fate steps in and changes the lives of all three. The most outstanding number is Astaire’s famous Puttin’ on the Ritz, a split-screen gem with a chorus of miniature Astaires tap-dancing behind him. Designed by Astaire, it took five weeks of back-b |

Blues Dancing $3.15 Verdi, daughter of a Southern preacher, comes to Philadelphia in the 1970s and enrolls at the university. She meets Johnson, a poor, irresistible and militant student who teaches her about many things — including how to love heroin. Verdi is rescued by a professor who falls in love with her. Twenty years later, Johnson reenters Verdi’s life. From the Publisher Verdi, the pampered daughter of a prosperous Southern preacher, comes to Philadelphia in the 1970s to enroll at the university. Here she meets Johnson, a poor, irresistible, and militant student who teaches her about many things — including how to love heroin. Verdi almost succumbs to addiction, but she is rescued by Rowe, a conservative professor who saves her life and falls in love with her. Two decades later, Verdi and Rowe are sleep-walking through their marriage when Johnson returns. Verdi cannot deny her interest, and the two skid uncontrollably toward the desires of their youth. Smooth as jazz, and belted out with the rhythm and intensity that have become the hallmark of Diane McKinney-Whetstone’s prose, Blues Dancing is a poignant and compelling portrait of inner-city life and of the redemptive powers of love’s rediscovery. |

City $12.75 The City opens up in with the funky and sensuous Cosmic Monkey featuring Jeffrey Osbourne’s slinky overdubbed harmonies. Hello Again is Wes Montgomery-breezy soul samba. Next up is Side Steppin’ s high-spirited blast of ’80s-era disco jazz. The City’s dreamy blend of Boney James’ soulful tenor saxophone, shivery keyboards, boogaloo congas, bluesy guitar and cognac-smooth jazz vocal follows. Las Vegas is an exuberant congress of dancing guitar licks, Michael Paulo’s throaty sax and a bouncing hip-hop swing beat. Old Friends is a quiet fire ballad caressed by Brown and James’ tender interplay. Winelight ’s blend of Brown’s Grover Washington, Jr.-channeling solos and tasty club beats is complemented by the silky-smooth party starter Jumpin’ Uptown. Food For the Moon ’s cool ‘n funky hip-hop jazz groove flows into a faithful/playful voice box-juiced version of Johnny Guitar Watson’s Reel Mutha For Ya. Fittingly, the album closes with the sublime Brown/James chillout duet The City (Instrumental). The City proves beyond a doubt that Paul Brown is one of the most exciting and important guitarists in contemporary jazz. |

Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Astaire Story is a 1952 album by Fred Astaire. The album was conceived of and produced by Norman Granz. Granz, the founder of Clef Records (and later Verve Records), was also responsible for the Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts, at which all of the musicians on the album had performed . The album provides an overview of Astaire’s musical career, plus two original compositions by Oscar Peterson (“The Astaire Blues” and “The Second Astaire Blues”), and an informal Jam session . Astaire also demonstrates his tap dancing on three tracks . Peterson spoke warmly of the sessions that produced The Astaire Story in his autobiography, co-written by Gene Lees. Peterson noted that vocally, Astaire was not naturally attuned to Jazz phrasing, and that Astaire enjoyed playing the drums at home. Astaire gave each of the musicians on the album a gold identification bracelet, inscribed ‘With thanks, Fred A’. Ray Brown lost his bracelet, Alvin Stoller’s was stolen, but Peterson wore his for the rest of his life . A deluxe four LP box set was produced of The Astaire Story, in a strictly limited edition of 1384 copies, each one hand signed by Astaire and the artist David Stone Martin, who contributed original drawings and paintings to the album . Comedy Venues $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: At bars and nightclubs, or restaurants with live entertainment, a cover charge is a flat fee for entry to defray the cost of entertainment such as live musicians, singers or a DJ, or for the use of a dance floor, pool tables, or services such as dancing lessons. In some countries, restaurants without entertainment may have a cover charge or (“couvert”) for bread, butter, olives, and other accompaniments. Bars and clubs that use cover charges use the cover charges for several reasons. In some cases, popular bars and clubs have a substantial excess demand; patrons are lined up outside the club waiting to get in. In this case, the club can gain additional revenue from customers by requiring an entrance charge. Other bars and clubs use cover charges only on nights when there is live entertainment or a DJ, to help defray the cost of paying the band, comedian, or DJ. Cover charges are usually much lower for local, semi-professional bands or entertainers than for better-known touring bands from other regions. In North America, the cover charge for a performance by a local teenage band may be as low as a few dollars; a show by a nationally-known band with a recording contract may have a $10 to $15 cover. Some prestigious jazz clubs and comedy clubs have both a cover charge and a minimum drink requirement. In economics, the term “price discrimination” refers to charging different prices to different customers, based on the anticipated elasticity of demand of different customers. Bars often offer student discounts because university or college students will have a different willingness to pay than an average consumer, due to their budget constraints. Thus, the bar sets a lower price for entry for university and college students because students have a… More: |
