Scottsdale Dance Lesson Lets Spouses Show Off For Each Other by Jim Blowganza
When you’ve been married to someone for eighteen years, it is easy to fall into familiar but perhaps boring routines. My wife and kids and I had such predictable lives that if it were Wednesday, we already knew what was for dinner. The kids had their own sporting events that were as regular as clockwork. Even Sunday brunch at the club had lost its appeal. We realized that we needed to do something different to bring some new energy into our lives.
My wife and I decided to some new activities to get out of our rut. Since we live in Scottsdale and there are plenty of opportunities for leisure time activities, I suggested a few different options, such as golf or music lessons. However my wife wanted us to take a Scottsdale dance lesson.
The first time I heard about the Dance Lessons I could take in Scottsdale, I scoffed at the idea. After all, I tend to think of myself more as a Fred Flintstone than I do a Fred Astaire. On two feet, I’m a total klutz, so there was no way the thought of taking Dancing lessons appealed to me.
I’d never mastered dancing even though I participated in sports all my life. Running and jumping seemed to come natural, but then I didn’t have to think about which foot goes first on those. I only agreed to dance lessons at Scottsdale to please my wife and lift our spirits. Soon I would know the difference between a rumba and a waltz.
It may have been the best thing that we’ve ever done together. We were both nervous about taking lessons. We’re over 40 and should know everything after all. But our instructor was patient and very funny. He paired up all the students; I got to dance with my wife, and immediately began showing us the basics. I was enjoying my Scottsdale Dance Class.
After each lesson my wife and I go out for a bite to eat or a movie. We take what we’ve learned out on the town and regularly attend dance events at the local studio. It’s revitalized our relationship and for a modest price has given us a new hobby. So when the band starts playing at the country club I can now lead my lovely wife confidently to the dance floor. All because of a simple Scottsdale dance lesson. Who’d have figured?

Somewhere over the Rainbow: The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals $18.14 The “Golden Age” referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era’s musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can’t encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany’s of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches her… |

Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers At RKO: Motion Picture Soundtrack Anthology $24.96 During the “talkies’” first decade, Hollywood quickly rivalled Broadway as a major platform for the best pop music, and no franchise underlined this potential better than the Astaire/Rogers musicals released by RKO Pictures. Ironically, that golden age of musicals preceded the introduction of LPs, so it’s been left until now for the release of this comprehensive two-CD anthology, which extrac… |

Blue Skies [VHS] $14.94 It’s a flimsy excuse to romp through more than two dozen Irving Berlin songs, but Blue Skies is good fun nonetheless (and one of the top-grossing films of 1946). Bing Crosby is a restless nightclub entrepreneur, Fred Astaire his Broadway buddy, Joan Caulfield the woman they both want. Ignore the plot and enjoy the numbers, especially Astaire’s marvelous “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” which is breathtaking… |

Holiday Inn (Three Disc Collector’s Set) $13.37 In 1942, Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby teamed up at Der Bingle’s Paramount Pictures for Holiday Inn, a black-and-white musical that proves more entertaining than Crosby’s color semi-remake White Christmas in 1954. Astaire and Crosby play partner/rival song-and-dance men who compete for the hand of their performing partner, played by Virginia Dale. After Crosby loses, he moves to the Connecticut cou… |
