Ballet Training and Jazz

A highly versatile dance style, jazz is a fusion of hip-hop, ballet, lyrical, contemporary, and acro moves. However, ballet training has a bigger part in jazz
Dance Lessons
because many specific ballet techniques are also used in jazz. The following are just some of the basic techniques used in both Dancing styles:

Pirouette

A pirouette is a technique wherein you turn on one leg. In jazz, a pirouette with an inward rotation is a common part of many basic routines.

Fouette

Fouette is another dance from taught to beginner students. This technique refers to a quick change in the working leg’s direction as it passes behind or in front of the supporting leg. It can also refer to a quick change in the direction of the body movement.

Spotting

Spotting is a technique that helps keep your balance while doing turning techniques such as a fouette or a pirouette. This can also help you avoid getting dizzy when doing repetitive turns.

What to Wear during Classes

Because of the complex and highly energetic movements such as leaps and turns included in the routines, you should be wearing an outfit that’ll allow you to move freely but still exposes your body lines. If you’re taking jazz dance lessons, make sure you have the following outfit and dancing gear:

Jazz Shoes

Shoes made specifically for jazz are usually made of canvas or leather. However, consult your Dance Teacher first before buying a pair. Some dance teachers prefer regular jazz shoes, while others allow their students to dance barefooted or wear soft Ballet Shoes.

To make the most out of your money, go for leather jazz shoes. This might be more expensive than a canvass pair but it’ll last longer. As for the style, you can choose from the regular jazz shoe, jazz sandal, dancer-trainer shoe, and jazz sneaker.

Top and Pants

Ideal tops to be worn during a Dance Lesson are body hugging tank tops to allow you to execute tricky moves easily and clearly see your body lines. The right tank top can be paired with a pair of jazz pants, which looks like a pair of sweat pants but is made of a lighter fabric. It’s also more form-hugging and is available in different lengths: Capri, full-length, and ankle-length variations. You can also wear a leotard on top paired with tights, a common outfit among dancers and gymnasts.

If you’re not sure what outfit is required for your dance lessons, it’s best to ask your teacher or the studio on what to wear during lessons. Many dance instructors are not strict when it comes to Dancewear, as long as the students are comfortable enough. When shopping for the right dancewear, keep in mind that ballet training is part of the lessons, so you should wear something that won’t restrict your movements.
