Dance, Fools, Dance (DVD) $19.95 Look out, Jake Luva. That sinuous moll cuddling up to you on the dance floor isn’t the floozy she seems. She’s Bonnie Jordan, ex-society girl and current undercover reporter, investigating a murder that has your fingerprints all over it. She has what it takes, all right – to take you and your crime empire down. As Bonnie and Jake, Joan Crawford and Clark Gable exude plenty of pre-Code sensuality in their first screen teaming. Gable is fifth-billed, but the moment he and Crawford go into a clinch, there is no question who in the film could match her star power. Crawford and Gable went on to make seven more films together. And each smoldered with the red-hot chemistry originally sparked in Dance, Fools, Dance. |

Sinbad the Sailor blends live action and animation as Kelly dances his way into an Arabian Nights world after rubbing Aladdin’s Lamp. Showcasing talents from ballet companies of New York, Paris, London and Rome, this imaginative tour de force is a must-see for dance lovers everywhere! |

Go Into Your Dance (DVD) $19.95 Screen greats and off-screen married couple Al Jolson and Ruby Keeler go into their dance with their only movie pairing. The cast includes torch singer Helen Morgan. And the production’s ties to the landmark 42nd Street are many: Keeler made her screen debut in that film, Harry Warren and Al Dubin return to offer irresistible tunes (with ritzy staging showcasing About a Quarter to Nine and A Latin from Manhattan) and a story by Bradford Ropes, whose novel inspired 42nd Street, is the basis for this film’s mix of musical and melodrama. But Meg pulls the wrong switch – the one that opens a stage trapdoor – and sends the prima ballerina into a career-ending plunge to the floor below. Margaret O’Brien and Cyd Charisse play two generations of dancers in this lavish Technicolor® film that combines a tragic story of guilt and broken dreams with the opulence of ballet (among the elegant visuals: the mirrored floor that emulates the swans’ watery domain). It’s a must-see for fans of dance films. |

Amusement Parks in Kentucky: Tombstone Junction, Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom, Beech Bend Park, Kaintuck Territory $8.78 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Tombstone Junction was a small western town themed park located on KY State Route 90 in Cumberland Falls, Kentucky where operation was started in the 1960s and continued uninterupted until the park was heavily damaged by fire in the year 1989. After this first fire the park continued limited operation until completely destroyed by a second fire in 1991. The park featured a recreation of a small western frontier town complete with train station, working saloon, dance hall, jailhouse, shantys, and shops. There was also an outdoor amphitheater which hosted live shows featuring many of the biggest names in country and western music of the period. The biggest attraction at Tombstone Junction was a full sized standard gauge operating steam train which was unheard of in parks, especially one as small as Tombstone. Several things made Tombstone Junction unique among theme parks including its small size and the laid back “mom and pop” way the park was run. The park developed from the building and operation of the “Cumberland Falls Scenic Railroad” in the 1960s. The railroad was built by Millard and Morris Stephens from nearby Whitley City as an attraction to compliment The Falls Motel (which they owned) which was near Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, both of which were a very short distance down the road. The railroad was built and laid around the edges of a large cut between two mountains that had been filled in enough so that a 2 1/2 mile “L” shaped circle of track could be laid. This was almost a copy of the idea behind the “Rebel Railroad” in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee which eventually grew into what is known as the Dollywood themepark today. For the second season of operation the railroad’s developers made in-house additions of buildings, shop… More: |

Anthems: Electronic ’80s, Vol. 2 $22.99 Following the success of their first Anthems: Electronic 80s compilation, the Ministry of Sound label returns with another collection incorporating the best synth pop, New Romantic, and indie dance tunes of the colorful and inventive decade. Alongside number ones from the Human League, Kraftwerk, and the Communards, there are iconic tracks from Spandau Ballet, Eurythmics, and Duran Duran, one-hit wonders (Kim Carnes’ “Bette Davis Eyes,” New Musik’s “Living by Numbers”), and less familiar material from the likes of Devo, Laid Back, and Re-Flex. Highlights from the first disc include Talk Talk’s gloriously atmospheric “It’s My Life,” Scritti Politti’s reggae-fused “The Word Girl” and Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s anthemic “Welcome to the Pleasuredome.” Erasure’s infectious hi-NRG pop classic “A Little Respect,” Altered Images’ impossibly uplifting “I Could Be Happy” and the Communards’ chart-topping cover version of “Don’t Leave Me This Way” provide the standouts for Disc Two, while Simple Minds’ Brat Pack staple “Don’t You Forget About Me,” Stock, Aitken and Waterman’s finest moment, Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record),” and New Order’s brooding, bass-heavy “True Faith” are the choice cuts from the third disc. However, as the first compilation gathered many of the decade’s biggest electro hits, this second volume seems to struggle to fill its 60 tracks. Indeed, it’s hard to see quite how the likes of Billy Idol’s “White Wedding” and the Stranglers’ “Golden Brown” fit into the genre, which makes the lack of Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode, arguably two of the biggest synth pop groups of the ’80s, even more puzzling. But even though it suffers from occasional padding, Anthems: Electronic ’80s, Vol. 2 is still a consistently enjoyable retrospective of one of the most influential and innovative musical eras. ~ Jon O’Brien, Rovi |

Big Blue Ball $12.67 Big Blue Ball is the long-awaited, much-anticipated collection of stand-out tracks culled from the all-star, pan-global collaborations that took place over three years of Peter Gabriel s legendary Recording Week gatherings at his state-of-the-art Real World Studios in the English countryside. Produced by Peter Gabriel, Karl Wallinger (of World Party, Waterboys) and Stephen Hague (Pet Shop Boys, OMD), it s a nonstop stream of poignant, sterling performances by a truly stellar lineup of artists– including Gabriel, Wallinger, Sinead O Connor, Natacha Atlas, Iarla O Lionaird and James McNally (both of Afro Celt Sound System), Papa Wemba, Joseph Arthur, Tanzania s late music legend Hukwe Zawose, Hungary s Marta Sebestyen, Tim Finn, Cameroonian starFrancis Bebey, Vernon Reid, Justin Adams, Jah Wobble, Billy Cobham, Rupert Hine, gospel group the Holmes Brothers, flamenco guitarist Juan Canizares, Japanese percussionist Joji Hirota, and many more in all totaling 75 artists from over 20 countries. Big Blue Ball s songs were created and recorded between 1991 and 1995, but the album has been an active work-in-progress at Real World ever since, a labor of love with ace producer Stephen Hague working closely with Peter Gabriel and Karl Wallinger. Holding the disparate elements in place is the powerful backbone of big drum tracks underpinning many of the songs. Wallinger says, Everyone was in orbit around this groove, and there is a universal language of dance, of dance grooves. That groove is the one bit that s non-denominational on the album. |

Bravo $11.98 Since making the full transition from Cologne’s Kompakt to Berlin’s BPitch Control, Sascha Funke’s productions found a way to become a little noisier and a lot more pop-oriented at the same time. Funke’s trio of 12s for the then young Kompakt helped define the sect of that label that thrived on warm, clean, uncluttered productions. When he switched over to BPitch — where he made his biggest splash of all, with a magnificent 2001 cover of Bros.’ “When Will I Be Famous?” — he fell into that label’s reputation for more aggressive sounds and began to leave a significant impact on a second label. Bravo, Funke’s overdue full-length debut, is a hodgepodge of old and new material that plays to the producer’s two primary strengths — full-bodied arrangements that balance abrasion and comfort, and his love of dance-pop, regardless of whatever scene it can be shoehorned into. The two tracks with vocalist Fritz Kalkbrenner are unsurprisingly two of the most emotional; while not quite as lyrically focused as Pet Shop Boys (one of Funke’s favorites), “Now You Know” and “Forms and Shapes” are as suited for the bedroom as they are tailored for the club. One of the most compelling features of the album is the tension between minimal-minded techno and progressive house. Funke never seems to commit one way or another, but it’s no matter — it helps create a sound of his own that can appeal to followers of both stripes. Those who prefer the Kompakt-era material (none of which is reprised here) will be made most happy with “Quiet Please,” a track where the open spaces between the notes are as important as the shimmers of keyboard. The only full-on mishap is “3:1 f? r die Liebe,” a sentimental track that samples everyone’s least favorite Cheap Trick single and, in the process, comes off as an outtake from the Jerry Maguire score. Other than that, it’s an excellent album from one of Germany’s most consistent producers. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi |

Compositions by Ottorino Respighi: Operas by Ottorino Respighi, La Boutique Fantasque, Feste Romane, Pini Di Roma, Fontane Di Roma, La Fiamma $9.05 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Operas by Ottorino Respighi, La Boutique Fantasque, Feste Romane, Pini Di Roma, Fontane Di Roma, La Fiamma, Maria Egiziaca, La Campana Sommersa, Gli Uccelli. Excerpt: La Boutique fantasque or The Magic Toy Shop was a ballet conceived by Léonide Massine who wrote the choreography and the libretto. Ottorino Respighi wrote the music based on piano pieces by Gioachino Rossini. Its world premiere was at the Alhambra Theatre in London on 5 June 1919 and was performed by Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. Lydia Lopokova and Massine played the roles of the can-can dancing dolls in the original performance with Enrico Cecchetti as the shopkeeper. Design for the original 1919 performance was by André Derain. The story of the ballet has similarities to Die Puppenfee (“The Fairy Doll”), an old German ballet which had been performed by Serge and Nicholas Legat in Saint Petersburg in the early twentieth century. Others note the similarities to Hans Christian Andersen’s The Steadfast Tin Soldier. Massine’s story centers around the love story between two can-can dancer dolls in a toy shop. Its general theme is lightly satirical, incorporating elements of comedy, national folk dance and mime as well as classical choreography, and its story unfolds in three acts. The story is set in France in late 19th century. A world-famous toymaker has created exquisite dancing dolls in his magic toy shop. The automata perform various dance routines for the prospective customers. In the beginning, the store entertains two English ladies and an American family. Some dolls perform a tarantella for the guests, followed by other dolls dancing a mazurka. Subsequently, new dolls come in and perform another routine involving a snob and a melon vendor. Dance Night $5.04 IT IS SOMETIME AFTER the turn of the century in Lamptown, Ohio, a working-class town filled with factory girls. Powell understands how small towns work, wrote the Boston Globe, the ways in which this is good, and the ways in which it is poisonous; the whole book is suffused with yearning for the world beyond. Every Thursday night at the Casino Dance Hall above Bauer’’s Chop House and across the street from Elsinore Abbott’’s Bon Ton Hat Shop and Bill Delaney’’s Saloon and Billiard Parlor, women and a few men gather to escape their pedestrian lives in fantasy, and sometimes to live out these fantasies. Observing all are the novel’’s two young protagonists, Morry, who dreams of becoming an architect and developer, and Jen, an unsentimental orphan of fourteen who, abandoned by her mother, dreams of escape. |

Disco 4 $15.99 When remixing, the Pet Shop Boys make any artist sound a lot like the Pet Shop Boys, which is probably why they get the job in the first place. The fourth volume of their sporadic Disco compilation series breaks from the usual plan — outside artists remixing Pet Shop Boys songs — and focuses on PSB as remixers. Here they turn the Killers’ “Read My Mind” into a dance anthem and Yoko Ono’s “Walking on Thin Ice” into a Euro-trash track that would mix well with any given Fischerspooner song, while Madonna’s “Sorry” turns into something that could have fallen off PSB’s 1987 album, Actually. The only big surprise is how often singer Neil Tennant adds his own vocals to the tracks, and in the case of David Bowie’s “Hallo Spaceboy” he goes as far as to add new lyrics. This Bowie remix was almost impossible to obtain before and the cuts are all mixed together to create a nonstop journey, so at the very least Disco 4 offers hardcore fans more new experiences than previous volumes. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi |

Down for Life $13.96 Subtract “Laffy Taffy,” one of several outrageously sleazy dance-rap singles that inspired revelry as often as contempt during the early 2000s — depending on listeners’ tolerance for cleverly produced tracks with sharp hooks and crude sexual euphemisms — and D4L’s Down for Life wouldn’t be much of a story. “Laffy Taffy” eventually became the most downloaded song, hit the top of the Billboard chart, and helped prove that the single was back (if not in the physical sense), especially since its success didn’t translate to spectacular album sales. Most listeners heard it as a novelty track, as it came out of nowhere with freaky vocals and minimal backing ? la Ying Yang Twins’ “Wait (The Whisper Song).” Though its rhymes are far lewder than those of 50 Cent’s “Candy Shop,” the song’s simplistic hook is the real hook. A similar production sensibility holds throughout the remainder of this Atlanta group’s Atlantic-distributed debut. Apart from a couple clever tracks where the MCing is of little consequence (generic rhymes about making money, busting caps, and busting other things), a lasting impression is not made. T.I. and Young Jeezy they are not; but give them some credit for coming up with one of the most enjoyed and talked-about singles of late 2005 and early 2006. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi |

Jamaican Sound Systems: King Tubby, Coxsone Dodd, Joseph Hoo Kim, Duke Reid, Black Chiney, Lloyd Daley, Bass Odyssey, Harry Mudie, Killamanjaro $10.18 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: King Tubby (born Osbourne Ruddock, January 28, 1941 February 6, 1989) was a Jamaican electronics and sound engineer, known primarily for his influence on the development of dub music in the 1960s and 1970s. Tubby’s innovative studio work, which saw him elevate the role of the mixing engineer to a creative fame previously only reserved for composers and musicians, would prove to be highly influential across many genres of popular music. He is often cited as the inventor of the concept of the remix, and so may be seen as a direct antecedent of much dance and electronic music production. King Tubby’s music career began in the 1950s with the rising popularity of Jamaican sound systems, which were to be found all over Kingston and which were developing into enterprising businesses. As a talented radio repairman, Tubby soon found himself in great demand by most of the major sound systems of Kingston, as the tropical weather of the Caribbean island, (often combined with sabotage by rival sound system owners) led to malfunctions and equipment failure. Tubby owned an electrical repair shop on Drumalie Avenue, Kingston, that fixed televisions and radios. It was here that he built large amplifiers for the local sound systems. In 1961/62 he built his own radio transmitter and briefly ran a pirate radio station playing ska and rhythm and blues which he soon shut down when he heard that the police were looking for the perpetrators. Tubby would eventually form his own sound system, Tubby’s Hometown Hi-Fi, which became a crowd favourite due to the high quality sound of his equipment, exclusive releases and Tubby’s own echo and reverb sound effects, at that point something of a novelty. Tubby began working as a disc cutter for producer Duke Reid in 1968. Reid… More: |

Jean Nouvel: Lousiana Manifest $45 In 2005, more than ever, architecture is annihilating places, banalizing them, violating them. Sometimes it replaces the landscape, creates it in its own image, which is nothing but another way of effacing it . . . At a time when we rush across the world faster and faster, when we listen to and watch the same global networks, share feelings about the same disasters, when we dance to the same hits, watch the same matches, when they flood us with the same films, in which the star is global, when the president of one country wants to rule the world, when we shop in cloned shopping centers, work behind the same eternal curtain walls . . . and when whatever good might come of this forms no part of global priorities . . . the global economy is accentuating the effects of the dominant architecture, the type that claims ‘we don’t need context.’ And yet debate on this galloping frenzy does not exist: architectural criticism, invoking the limits of the discipline, is content with aesthetic and stylistic reflections devoid of any analysis of the real, and ignores the crucial historical clash that–more insistently every day–sets a global architecture against an architecture of situations, generic architecture against an architecture of specificity.” So says the international architecture star Jean Nouvel in his manifesto, published here in 12 languages, along with images of his recently completed Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark. |

Kitsun? Maison, Vol. 9 $16.98 Anyone wanting a quick look at the hottest players in the modern alternative dance scene could do a lot worse than picking up a Kitsun? Maison compilation. Beginning in the mid-2000s, the fashion label has been releasing records that have carefully selected the best and brightest artists playing straight club dance, progressive house (usually French), danceable indie rock, and updated synth pop. Vol. 9 definitely lived up to the high level of quality previous volumes established, and along with being a snapshot of current trends, it played out as an excellent soundtrack for a night of good times. There are entries from around the world capturing many aspects of club/dance music (and not so clubby sounds like Washed Out’s dreamy bedroom electronic jam “Belong”) that fit together almost perfectly. Highlights of the set are many, but a few standouts are Hurts’ wonderfully retro-OMD meets Pet Shop Boys “Wonderful Life” (here remixed by Arthur Baker!), Crookers’ collabo with Yelle on the bubbling “Cooler Couler,” Gamble & Burke’s ’80s-funk channeling “Let’s Go Together,” and the many songs that capture the sweet spot between electro pop and indie rock that Phoenix have made so popular (Jamaica’s “Short and Entertaining,” Your Nature’s “Forward Motion,” Fenech-Soler’s “Stop and Stare”). ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi |

Love in the Time of Taffeta $9.99 Go back to prom and watch bumbling, lovable Iley Gilbert try to get it right this time around in Eugénie Olson’s endearing story of love, bad behavior, and sequins. At age 30, Iley Gilbert is thoroughly sick of trying to make it in the photo biz, and disenchanted after putting in stints at a Boston–area newspaper, a photography gallery, and even a pathetic frame shop. When she abruptly quits the frame shop, she’s ready to give up for good, until she spots a compelling ad in the paper. A photographer who shoots high school prom photos is looking for an assistant. Not only that, he’s willing to pay top dollar to someone who would give up Friday and Saturday nights to help take pre–prom pictures of high–school kids dressed in their finery and candid shots during the dance. William Jasper, Prom Photographer, is not the brand of aging, greasy wedding photographer she was expecting. Rather, he’s 35, strikingly handsome, and sharp–witted. Iley is instantly attracted to him and gets the sense the feeling is mutual. But William isn’t everything he’s made himself out to be–that is, he’s not single. He’s got a permanently out–of–town wife–he doesn’t need a girlfriend. But Iley has lost her way, and she’ll need her friends and her photos and a lot of bad proms before she can find her way back on track, away from the sleezeball, and into a life that’s a little more picture–perfect. |

Middlebury is a beautiful, intensive place to spend four years, and I’ve met lots of interesting people here.”What does the atmosphere Middlebury have to offer? Well, Robert Frost seemed to like it. For 23 summers, he made the mountains just outside of Middlebury his home. When he welcomed New England into his heart, the Middlebury area struck him as particularly captivating. The founder of the town’s Vermont Book Shop knew the poet well, and the Middlebury College Library houses many of his first editions. And after a night out on the town, did you know MiddRides, a bus designed to save students from their own aimless, drunken debauchery, sometimes offers cookies to its passengers (as long as they aren’t tossing some of their own)? The town and campus are so safe that theft is rarely a problem at Middlebury – but bike “borrowing” |
